Our times at University were some of the best in my life. The fights, the self discovery, the make up lunch and make up nap times. The jokes, the tears, the lessons, the wedding, the other man...whom I love dearly. Niel, please take care of this girl. I warn you! Naz, this has been such a hard 2 years for you. You're kind of my Mr. Miyagi! I LOVE YOU ALWAYS!

Thanks also to my family at large and all the friends I've made in America and across the globe. Without your selfless support and interest in my career and person hood, none of this would be possible. Thank you and I love you. And yes, the book is on it's way! Those who I forgot to mention, I sincerely apologise and thank you guys from the bottom of my soles (yep, the feet ones). Here's to art and our insatiable apatite as human to tell stories through the use of our hands, voices, minds and hearts!

I should also take a moment to thank Siddhartha Gautama. I am in awe of you. Thanks for setting such a great example.

Love and Repect;

Bon Appetit!

I've always felt compelled to write lyrics with a certain moral character. The new record, "The Starving Artist and The Enchanted Vending Machine" as produced by Javier Martinez and Jason Martins is a total 360 though. Think; party whore, buttered pecan pop corn laced with Vodka infused whip cream served with a drizzle of Japanese techno fudge. If you are really clever, try to work out the hidden meanings behind the new collection of lyrics. Set for release early 2011 and um, Bon Appetit!

Remodernist Music Manifesto -

Remodernist Music
A Manifesto by
Gerschweyn Matthews

As a professional fan of film and music I've been very much taken a back by the practical and theoretical work of Fine Artist, Film Maker and Photographer, Jesse Richards. I think he is most known for his post modern, Manifesto on Remordernist Cinema. After some communication with the genius that Mr. Richards, I've been inspired to expand on his work in the context of music. The creation, production, sale and consumption there of. For further information on the works of Jesse Richards, do visit with him at; http://www.wix.com/jesserichards/jesserichardssite. For further information on Stuckism visit; http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/group.php?gid=2224155647&v=info

1. Remodernist Music argues for the establishment of truthful reflections and expressions about the human experience as the most important intention with the creation of music.

2. Remordernism in music argues that the pursuit of "perfection" within the recording process is merely a cosmetic folly. This is so for the remodernist musician functions at his / her highest level of creativity in the event of probing into and documenting the intricacies and mysteries pertaining to the human experience. An experience littered with imperfection, randomness and unapologetic emotiveness.

3. "Perfect" takes and high end post production processes does not improve the artistic value of a composition. Rather, I think that how accurately a song mimics the emotional state that of which an artist is trying to convey has a more congruent relationship with the song in question’s artistic value. It’s about documenting and expressing truthfully, effectively.

4. Pondering further on the matter at hand, has lead me to believe that there is no such thing as precision (with which I imply perfection) but for in the minds of us. We are not perfect beings, we can thus never have perfect experiences as necessarily mediated through imperfect bodies. Given that we can have no real or rather proper understanding of un-experienced events, the concept of perfection as an experience-able event is devoid of meaning. More over, why do we regard perfection higher then we regard lived experience? One being an idea, the other being lived reality.

5. With creating music, the remodernist musician does not set out on an ego-centric mission in the pursuit of "perfection" so as to gain the favor and respect of those who consume music. I think commercial success is very much a lower case experience brought about collaterally by the creative process itself. Remodernist Music argues that a successful musician is such by default though participating in the personally investigative event of creating music. The process of making and experiencing music is thought of (ideally) as a kind of melodic psychoanalyses.

6. Art, including music has functions other than that of pleasing our carvings for the experience of beauty for the sake of experiencing beauty. One of these important functions pertaining to Remodernist Music is that of journaling and reflecting on individual and social experience in an attempt to better understand the nature the self in relation to all that is other.

7. Remodernist Music does not seek to establish celebrity, nor does it agree with the establishment of such in the pursuit of gain; both monitory and egocentric. Rather, the composer is thought of as a questioner, an existential philosopher or metaphysical surgeon up in arms with prevailing ignorance regarding reality; both personal and collective.

8. Popular Music will always be lesser music if maximized sales are the driving force behind the creation there of. Do we think of a certain brand of soft drink as invaluable in aid of our quest to better understand the human condition just because of creators of the product in question are “living it up?” I do not think that we can or should measure the success of a record using statistics pertaining to the “product” at hand’s financial performance. From a consumer stand point; if a record or a single track stirs the emotions and grey matter of it’s creator and that of subsequent listeners due to it functioning as a metaphysical light bulb switch triggered by the application of mind and thereby illuminating a missing piece of the “human experience puzzle”, the record or track is successful. Music is made by us, in it’s best form it unapologetically tells about us.

9. No subject matter is taboo. My eye ball splitting anger towards a certain pseudo man of God; for reasons of him having sexually assaulted a relative of mine. My less then savory ideas on Scientology and celebrities who babble on and on about the supposed genius of L. Ron Hubbard. Issues pertaining to self investigation and social commentary such as the before mentioned are all fair game.

10. Our preference of one melodic structural pattern over another is completely arbitrary. There is no rational thought behind say my preference to writing in a C-minor chord rather then a C-major chord. What makes a good melody has nothing to do with melodic structural patterns in and by the phenomena itself. It’s about what the patterns and effectual sounds mean to us.

11. The experience of music is always mediated and the quality of this mediated experience relies on the meaningful application of an interpretive mind to the piece at hand. With “meaningful,” I imply helpful in clarifying and revealing personal and collective truths about ourselves as human beings. Flowing from this I think that your “non- professional” musician friend’s melodic ode to his girlfriend is just as good a piece of music as let us say Radiohead’s “Fake Plastic Trees.” This is so if your friend and his girlfriend find “meaningfulness” in the piece. Fake Plastic Trees is thought of as a good song in a Remodernist sense due to the fact that the piece is “meaningful” to Yorke, his band mates and fans. One could then say that the friend in question is just as good a musician as Mr. Yorke himself. That said, comparative talk regarding musical abilities of different musicians are of little value as the value of the music they create have more to do with personal and collective “meaningfulness” then complex melodic constructions and the precise execution there of.

"The Starving Artist and the Enchanted Vending Machine" - Raison d'être

"The Starving Artist and the Enchanted Vending Machine" is my new concept record about an an Evil Record Label Boss, a Starving Artist and a Magical (Persian) Vending Machine capable of transforming an emaciated + lame singer songwriter into a Kick Arse Pop Star!

The musical context of the current record is very different from how I normally approach music and I must say that it took a lot of convincing from Producers Jay Martinez and Jason Martinez to get me, as you guys say "into the swing of things." Glad I did though as the writing process for this outing has really been a learning experience. Very often as singer and writer I tend to hide behind intellectualism preferring to write about "the other" in a very objective way. I do the research, I convince myself that an event in time or as experienced by a certain individual is "important" enough to engage with musically and morally. I think a lot of people who've heard my music often feel alienated by the subject matter of my songs, my accent and this gloomy post vampire like image I've carefully garnished myself in. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I take my self too seriously and in a very big way this reality has effectively alienated me from music buyers and appreciators...not a good move as a relatively unknown musician.

The new record is much more relaxed and fun...it shows that I do have a sense of humor and that good music does not need to regard intellectualism and discussions pertaining to morality. For the first time ever I've actually ventured into a recording booth without a vocal plan. I pretty much wrote the new batch of songs as a response to Jay and Jason's electronic wizardry. They have so much fun with music and I desperately need to have more with music in general; as per all of my friends' and musical peers' back round chatter. "Ok, guys! Chill out now...I'm trying to have fun here!"

The record does have a lot of piano work, odd time signatures, wordy lyrics, ethnic vocal chants and some references to Persian Religion and Gods such as Ahura Mazda. These traits are signature to me as a musician...this time however we mixed things up a lot with European inspired synth melodies and beats, video game like bit crushing and a brighter even romantic lyrical tone. I'm sure you guys will pick up on the "f!@ck the music business as it operates today" underlying theme throughout the whole record. I'm a lot funnier and approachable now than let's say a year back on the previous outing; "Die Probleem met Picasso" as produced by Jason Magnuson and DJ Pennington. I'll still kick your arse though on a night of debating issues pertaining to all things Religious, Political, Video Game Scores and Yada Yada Yada!

"The Starving Artist and the Enchanted Vending Machine" is scheduled for release in December of 2010. Look out for the first single and accompanying video off the new record to be released in November of 2010. Thanks all the guys and girls working with me on this one aka Jason Martins, Jay Martinez, Nikye Pennington, Stamatina Prekas, Ymki van den Berg, DJ Pennington, Jason Magnuson, Paul Seeds and all the wonderful guys and girls who work with Nikye and Stamatina. I love, respect and appreciate you all very much. "Ek is niks sonder julle nie."

Very happy and honored to be working with SA singer songwriter, Inge
Beckmann of Lark on a new track to feature on "The Starving Artist

beauty of a thousand fallen Ahura. Um, you guys are in for a bloody

Joe "The Visualist" Harris and Gerschweyn Matthews Colab!

I'm very excited about working with film maker and video editor Joe The Visualist on "The Decapitation Peter Mueller." TDPM is a short film and film score project about a depressed writer who picks up a odd hitch hiker on route to his estranged family's house in "celebration" of his ailing mother's birthday. Harris is very much an "underground motion picture artist" currently getting much deserved attention for the trailer to his future release short called, "The Lonely Sound." New Role Demands Abs in 4 Weeks - HELP!

So I've been told to buff up a bit for the next
role I'm playing. As in Michael Cera
with abs sporting Danny Devito's height. Dee Ta is now my personal
trainer and together we'll hopefully sculpt me some killer abs in 4
weeks. I'm a little worried about the nudity, playing an emaciated
serial killer is awesome though. Hope my mother does not buy a ticket
to see this one...

"The Decapitation of Peter Mueller" - An alcoholic writer struggles to come to terms with the loss of his wife and young daughter, while dealing with the internal politics of his family. "TDPM" is currently in pre - production. Keep an eye out for more information on the "Die Probleem met Picasso" Short Film due this Fall of 2010.

Quotes and Quirks!

You’re old, certified ugly, poorly gifted, reek of tiger urine, easily penetrable by Freud, unappreciative of Foucault, masturbate to The Goonies and my God totally whips the ass of yours! This is ever so poignant for my God is 7 turning 8 in a day or so. Note that he is moderately retarded and sports 2 left hands robotically adhered to his singular under developed patella.

8 Bit Pop It Is!

I think we're calling the new style of music I'm into "8 Bit Pop." Very much inspired by 80's 8 bit and 16 bit video games from Atari and Nintendo...with a classical twist thanks to some really pretty and quirky piano and cello work. The team and I can not wait to get the new material out as we think you guys are going to love it...and I'm really keen on showing off my newly found sense of humor!

The track is recorded in Afrikaans, an off shoot of Dutch and German and is Gerschweyn's first language. This time round the young Picasso is all grown up and the video illustrates his possible demise as an effect of the Scientology Suicide incident explained in the other two "Die Probleem met Picasso" music videos; "Letter to Tom Cruise" and "Strategies of Retribution Regarding Devil Worship in The New World." The Surgeon's Photograph Pre-Production Information.

Irina Zhekova is the brilliant song writer behind Olivier Derivier's "Alone in The Dark" score for Atari. She is currently based in France and Bulgaria and does great work as a singer-songwriter, dancer and guitarist. I am very happy and humbled by the opportunity to work with Irina on my 2nd AFP called "The Surgeon's Photograph."

Also included in this project is Argentinian Film Composer, David Portugheis. Based in Buenos Aires, David does amazing work and I'm just as humbled about working with him on TSP.

Tentatively, production on "TSP" starts later this year with American Remodernist Cinema Pioneer Jesse Richards directing the accompanying short film. Jesse Richards is a God! More information on "TSP" and these brilliant artists to follow!

Thoughts on Remodernism...

I Think the Remordernists are right; "A true art is the visible manifestation, evidence and facilitator of the soul's journey. Spiritual art does not mean the painting of Madonnas or Buddhas. Spiritual art is the painting of things that touch the soul of the artist. Spiritual art does not often look very spiritual, it ...looks like everything else because spirituality includes everything." http://www.arthistoryarchive.com/arthistory/stuckism/Remodernism-Manifesto.html

Regarding Composing for Film and Theater...

Music for film often proves hard to compose, especially so in the case of film projects that are about authentic and raw human experiences. I have found working with film director Gaia Farnam and composer / sound scaper DJ Pennington, that less is more. Film music should always play a supporting role relation to script..., cinematography and performance and must never be obtrusive unless so intended. At it's best, it fuctions as a supporting actor or narator with it's highest intention being just that. In illustration, here is a clip of Gaia Farnam's "The Soul Remains"; music composed and produced by DJ Pennington and myself. http://www.vimeo.com/5613424
